5 Tips to Get Rid of Clogged Pores

Clogged pores are more than just an aesthetic problem. Over time, they may lead to acne, whiteheads, or blackheads. In the worst-case scenario, you might end up with a bacterial infection.

The causes of clogged pores range from excess sebum production to decreased skin elasticity. Genetics play a role, too. Moreover, certain ingredients in beauty products can block the pores and make them more noticeable.

If you’re having this problem, refrain from squeezing your pores. This habit can damage your skin and cause more issues further down the road. Instead, use these five tips to get rid of clogged pores and get clear skin!

1. Avoid Comedogenic Ingredients

Facial creams, lotions, and masks may contain comedogenic ingredients that clog the pores.

Coconut oil, for example, can cause breakouts and leave your skin oily due to its greasy texture. Mango butter, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, and beeswax have similar effects.

You may also want to avoid the following:

  • Lauric acid
  • Wheat germ oil
  • Sulfated jojoba oil
  • Glyceryl stearate
  • Talc
  • Shea butter
  • Oleyl alcohol
  • Cetyl acetate

These ingredients are not necessarily harmful to people with healthy skin. However, they may increase sebum production in those with oily or acne-prone skin.

2. Cleanse Your Skin

Daily cleansing is your best defense against clogged pores. This practice helps remove excess oil, debris, and makeup residue from your skin, leaving it clean and fresh.

Facial cleansers are more effective than water at removing impurities and cosmetic products. Some also contain ingredients that moisturize and hydrate your skin. When used regularly, they may improve the symptoms of acne, dermatitis, rosacea, and other skin conditions.

Dermatologists acknowledge the importance of facial cleansers—and you should do it, too. Ideally, use these products first thing in the morning and after removing your makeup or before bedtime.

3. Exfoliate at Least Once a Week

Proper exfoliation is just as important as regular cleansing. When done right, it removes dead skin cells and debris while allowing your skin to better absorb the active ingredients in creams and serums.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a mild chemical exfoliant if you have dry or sensitive skin. These products are also suitable for those with acne-prone or darker skin. But if your skin is oily, you may use stronger chemical treatments.

4. Try Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural cleanser and exfoliant, so go ahead and try it out. When applied regularly, it can unclog your pores and reduce acne breakouts.

Simply mix one teaspoon of water with two teaspoons of baking soda. Stir well and then apply the mixture to your face. Massage your skin gently and rinse after five minutes or so.

5. Apply a Clay Mask

Another thing you can do to get rid of clogged pores is to apply a bentonite clay mask.

This ingredient fights inflammation and soothes irritated skin while absorbing excess sebum. Over time, it may help prevent clogged pores and acne breakouts.

Depending on your preferences, you can either use pure bentonite clay or commercial bentonite clay masks.

If you choose the first option, mix the clay with water and apply it to your face once or twice a week. Leave it on your skin for about 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
