Battery life is crucial for your phone, so how can you make it last? This guide shows how to make your iPhone Baer last longer in 7 simple ways.
Did you know that Americans spend around 5.4 hours per day on their phones?
While this may seem like a lot of time, many of us aren’t just using our phones to scroll through social media. We use our phones to communicate with our coworkers, stay connected with friends and family members, listen to music, and so much more.
This is why when your phone battery dies, it can be extra frustrating. Luckily, there are things you can do to extend the battery life of your phone.
Check out this guide to discover how to make your iPhone battery last longer.
1. Understand How Phone Batteries Work
In order to make your iPhone battery last longer, you first need to understand how the battery degrades over time.
Your phone battery slightly degrades with every charge cycle. A charge cycle refers to the full discharge and charge of the phone battery. In other words, it’s when your phone is at 0 percent and charges all the way to 100 percent.
If your phone is at 50 percent and you charge it to 100 percent, then this is considered a partial charge cycle. Do this twice and you’ll have a full charge cycle.
Some people use more than a full charge cycle each day, and others use less than this. It really depends on how much you use your phone and what you use it for.
After about 400 full charge cycles, your phone’s battery will degrade about 20 percent. This means that your phone will only be able to store around 80 percent of the energy it originally did. And, with each charge cycle, your phone will continue to degrade.
So, if you can slow down the charge cycles- in other words, if you can extend the everyday life of your phone battery- you’ll be able to extend the battery’s lifespan.
In other words, the less you drain and charge your phone’s battery, the longer the battery will last. In order to drain your phone’s battery-less, you can either reduce the stress you put on the battery or make your phone more energy efficient.
We’ll dive into how you can do that below.
2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Avoiding extreme temperatures is one of the best ways to put less stress on your phone’s battery.
If your phone battery gets too hot or too cold, the battery’s lifespan can become shorter. Leaving your phone in your car is perhaps the worst culprit in terms of killing the battery with extreme temperatures. This is the case whether it’s hot and sunny out or below freezing.
So, bring your phone inside with you wherever you go, even if you don’t intend to use it.
Here are some other ways you can protect your phone from extreme temperatures/overheating:
Don’t place your phone under your pillow when charging
Don’t set your phone in the freezer if it gets too hot- just bring it inside and let it cool off naturally
Don’t charge your phone in direct sunlight
Also, make sure you avoid sudden changes in temperature with your phone.
3. Avoid Fast Charging
Fast chargers are a handy tool for when you don’t have time to wait around for your phone to be at 100 percent.
The downside to fast charging is that it can put a lot of stress on your phone’s battery. So, unless you’re really in a pinch, avoid using a fast charger.
Ideally, you should charge your phone from your computer or from a smart plugin, as this will limit the current and allow for a slower charge.
4. Avoid Draining Your Battery and Charging It All of the Way Up
To extend your iPhone’s battery life, you should also avoid draining your battery all the way to 0 percent and charging it all of the ways to 100 percent.
This is because draining and charging completely puts stress on a phone battery. Ideally, you want to keep your phone capacity above 20 percent and below 90 percent.
5. Turn Down the Screen Brightness
As we mentioned earlier, to improve your iPhone’s battery, you can either put less stress on it or make your phone more efficient. The above examples are all ways to put less stress on your phone.
To make your phone more efficient so you don’t need to charge it as often, one of the best things you can do is turn down the screen brightness. If you have trouble remembering to turn down the brightness level, we suggest using the Auto-Brightness feature. This feature automatically dims your phone when there is less light.
Or, you can also manually set your phone to the lowest visible light setting any time there’s a change in the dimness.
6. Look Out for Apps That Waste Battery
Chances are, you have some apps sitting on your phone that sucks up a lot of battery that you hardly ever use.
Go to your Settings and scroll through to find the apps that use the most battery. Then, you can disable or delete these apps. For apps that you want to keep using, you can restrict permissions that you don’t need.
Many popular apps also come with “lite” versions that eat up less battery, such as Facebook Messenger.
7. Turn On Airplane Mode
Airplane mode isn’t just for flying. It’s also a great way to conserve your phone’s battery life.
Airplane mode is perfect for when you want your phone handy but you don’t necessarily need to be using it. When you turn on airplane mode, you disable cellular, Bluetooth, and Wifi.
If you still need to chat over iMessage and use the internet, you can turn the airplane mode on and keep the Wifi on. In addition to turning the airplane mode on, we also suggest turning your phone to lower-power mode.
This can be great for when your phone is sitting idle, such as when you’re backing it up or when you’re sleeping. You can check out this guide to learn how to back up my iPhone on Mac.
